It seems that PHPBB3, which is the forum software we're using here at BaconMap, has been targeted by the spammers recently. Initially the CAPTCHA system (enter the letters/numbers you see in the graphic) during registration was enough to stop them from posting spam links inside the forums, but spammers' resourcefulness is second only to their annoyance.

Within the last few weeks, PHPBB3's CAPTCHA system has been cracked by spam bots across the internet, so it's essentially worthless. In that time, registrations here have gone up roughly %5000 percent... almost all of it is spam. Usually one or two of those new users get through every day to post some garbage on the forums.

To combat this, we've ditched the CAPTCHA system in favor of one that is simpler and unique to our forums, so hopefully it will keep the spammers out. During registration we ask you the name of our software, which of course is BaconMap. If you give the right answer you can register.

If anyone has any problems with the new system, please let us know via email at ezenisek@baconmap.org or asanchez@baconmap.org.

Thanks!
